If you've seen "Fiddler on the Roof," you probably think you know the classic Sholem Aleichem stories about Tevye and his daughters. You don't. (For starters: Tevye doesn't live in a shtetl!) In this class, we will read three of the incredibly sophisticated stories from the Tevye cycle by the Yiddish literary master Sholem Aleichem, explore the historical and cultural context and the genius of the author that made them possible, and gain a deeper appreciation for the complexities of Yiddish literature and Eastern European Jewish culture-- far beyond "Tradition!" No prior knowledge required; in fact, do yourself a favor and check what you thought you knew at the door. Copies of English translations of the three stories will be provided in the main office beginning May 23rd. Those who would like to read the entire Tevye story cycle (you will!) are encouraged to purchase the following edition: "Tevye the Dairyman and the Railroad Stories," translated by Hillel Halkin. (Translations of these works vary dramatically. We will be using this translation in class, as it gives the English reader greatest access to the many linguistic layers of the stories.) Dara Horn is the author of five novels: In the Image, The World to Come, All Other Nights, A Guide for the Perplexed, and the forthcoming Eternal Life. A scholar of Yiddish and Hebrew literature, she has taught courses in these literatures at Harvard University, Sarah Lawrence College, and City University of New York, and has lectured on these topics at over 200 universities and cultural institutions across North America, Australia and Israel. She is a member of CAI.
